How to Choose an MMA Cage: The Professional Checklist

Unlike a boxing ring, a cage must withstand thousands of pounds of lateral force during clinches and takedowns.

1. The “Fence” Factor: Gauge & Coating

  • Chain Link Gauge: Ensure your mesh is 9-gauge or 11-gauge vinyl-coated steel. Thinner gauges will stretch and sag, creating dangerous “pockets” where fingers or toes can get caught.

  • Coating: Look for dipped vinyl rather than spray-painted mesh to prevent rust and skin abrasions.

2. Corner Post & Padding Engineering

  • Post Diameter: For commercial use, 4-inch 100mm diameter structural steel is the minimum requirement.

  • Padding Density: Your corner pads should utilize high-density closed-cell foam. This ensures that even after a year of heavy use, the padding doesn’t “bottom out,” protecting athletes from the steel posts.

3. Space Saving: Foldable vs. MMA Room System

  • Foldable Cages: Ideal for multi-sport gyms. These units use locking pivot points to fold flat against a wall, reducing a 16ft cage footprint to less than 2sqm of storage space.

  • MMA Room System: The ultimate boutique solution. The top is equipped with a rail system and Monkey bar to achieve a seamless transition from MMA training to boxing training and physical training.
